Hamilton City Hall has welcomed a new, furry friend this past week. The giant dog, affectionately named Ralph, is a creation known as a living sculpture.
Living sculptures are art pieces that have been created with grass, vines, plants, or trees that continue to grow. These sculptures can be functional or simply decorative.
In the case of Ralph, he’s composed of Carex buchananii, a popular kind of sedge that is native to New Zealand. Ralph’s leatherleaf sedge “fur” was grown inside city greenhouses this spring.
Trevor McIntyre, a local metal artist, created Ralph’s frame with the City of Hamilton’s horticulture staff designing the internal infrastructure. There’s a soil and an irrigation system inside Ralph that’s integral to keeping the living sculpture healthy and growing.
Ralph is the largest living sculpture on the property, but he isn’t alone. Just a few meters away from Ralph is a green butterfly.
Ralph and the butterfly add plenty of fun and whimsy to Hamilton City Hall. Make sure to stop by and visit the pair this summer.
Have you gone out to see Ralph yet? Where else should Hamilton implement these fun living sculptures? Let us know in the comments
