There’s (now) an app for that

In today’s business environment, it’s all about connections. We ask our networks for job opportunities, referrals to mentors, advice, and introductions to potential new clients. On the flip side, we’re also happy to open our Rolodexes to help someone looking for assistance. But if you don’t have the right connections to ask, how can you get the assistance you need?

As the executive director of Innovation Factory, I am constantly meeting new and interesting people who are looking to help support our entrepreneurs and innovators. Conversely, I also know a vast number of entrepreneurs looking for connections that can help shape their success.

The idea to connect more people, matching solutions to problems, came to me when I received an email from a community member looking to connect with an expert on titanium nanoparticles. I get these types of requests quite often, but this one was very specific and I didn’t think I could offer much help. After a little reflection, though, I realized that I had just met with Dr. Ishwar Puri, Dean of Engineering at McMaster University. I knew Ishwar was a founder of NanoSpin, a startup company that utilizes nanoparticles as part of their technology. A quick email to Ishwar put me in contact with an expert in his network, and a connection was formed. Had the timing not been just right on this request, the connection may never have been made.

This experience made me realize that we need a forum to make more connections quickly, removing the middleman. We decided to build a web application to facilitate these connections. HamOnt- Connect.com is designed to help Innovation Factory clients and Hamilton community members share “asks” for things they need assistance with, and make connections with people who have the expertise or networks to help. Looking for contacts in the NHL? You can post and ask for an introduction. Looking for a great new developer to join your startup? Post on the web app to recruit someone.

I presented the idea for the app at the October HIVEX Conference, aptly titled “Connect.” Through the work- shop, Hamilton’s young professionals helped us identify resources and opportunities that should be included, and we defined three distinct categories within the web app: groups and clusters, asks, and volunteers.

Hamilton is full of people looking to help, and we want to make those connections easier. However, there is a fine balance for success—we need lots of people asking for help, and even more people willing to make connections. So, here’s my ask to you: If you have something you’re looking for assistance with, check out the app and submit your ask. Or if you have a few minutes to spare, head to the web app, swipe through the cards, and see if you can help anyone connect.

I believe this app has the ability to impact our community in a positive way. I have no doubt that Hamiltonians will step up to the plate and hundreds of connections will be made to help make our city stronger.
