Trudeau asks ministers if Santa can safely travel amid COVID-19

It’s clear to pretty much everyone that the holidays are going to look quite different this year. Families and friends won’t be able to safely gather and celebrate the season like usual, and a time of the year typically about togetherness is going to feel a little, well, distant.

However, hopeful that at least one thing can be normal this Christmas holiday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reached out to Canada’s health minister, Patty Hajdu, to find out whether or not Santa Claus is being given the go-ahead to travel across Canada dropping off presents like usual.

“Hey @PattyHajdu!,” tweeted Trudeau. “I’ve been getting more and more questions about Santa Claus and whether he’ll be able to safely travel across Canada this Christmas. I know you’ve been working closely with @GovCanHealth on this, so do you think that’ll be possible?”

Thankfully, Hajdu’s response wasn’t a disappointing one. “Great news, Prime Minister – @CPHO_Canada spoke with Santa to confirm that he’s been following public health guidelines and has downloaded the COVID Alert app! Better check with @BillBlair to make sure Santa can cross the border.”

With Hajdu passing the baton over to Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Canadians got the official word on Santa’s ability to cross the border.

“I’ve talked with folks at @CanBorder and it’s looking good!” replied Blair. “The work Santa’s been doing has been deemed essential for families across Canada, so he’s not restricted from coming into the country. Border agents know he’s coming, but let’s just triple check things with @MarcGarneau!”

Checking in with Minister of Transport Marc Garneau, it became clear that everything is good to go for Santa’s arrival this holiday.

“I’ve been going over out plans with @Transport_GC and have an update for your all,” tweeted Garneau. “Santa’s sleigh has been inspected and his pilot’s license is up to date. He’s ready for takeoff and cleared for flight!”

Trudeau then signed off following the official, positive updates from the ministers.

“Sounds great – thanks for the updates, team!” he said. “The holidays will obviously be quite different this year, but it’s good to know that Santa can still make his rounds. I’ll check back in as we get closer to Christmas to make sure everything’s still good to go.”
