Two Hamilton 7-Eleven stores are among those looking to serve alcohol

One of the world’s largest convenience store chains 7-Eleven applied to introduce in-store alcohol service in Ontario.
The announcement includes two Hamilton 7-Eleven locations including stores on Upper Wellington and Melvin Ave.
7-Eleven submitted a liquor license application with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) that is now at the public notice phase.

“To complement our fresh food and hot food programs, we are preparing for in-store service of a small selection of Ontario-made beer and wine products, offered during limited hours, and in designated consumption areas of our stores. Should we be successful in obtaining licences, all staff handling alcohol products will be SmartServe trained,” said 7-Eleven representatives in a statement released to the media.
“7-Eleven Canada is a responsible retailer and a trusted partner of the federal and provincial governments, controlling access to age-restricted products for over 25 years. We are committed to meeting the needs of our Ontario customers and we look forward to the opportunity to grow jobs and contribute to the Ontario economy.”
Although alcohol sales in convenience stores has been a hot button topic over the last few years, the liquor license would only be for on-site consumption only.
So, rather than picking up a six pack at the corner store, 7-Eleven locations in Hamilton would become small bars that serve alcohol directly to patrons.
With restaurants and bars now being able to provide take-out alcohol services, this opens a door for private companies like 7-Eleven to enter that alcohol sales game.
But, for now the application would only be for consumption within the convenience store.
