Two Hamilton heavyweights for exceptional pizza took home top honours at a national pizza competition this week.
MaiPai Tiki Bar and Cowabunga Pizza took home first and second place respectively in the Restaurants Canada 2023 Pizza Competition, which saw 27 exceptional pizza makers from across the country go head-to-head with their best pies.
MaiPai’s owner and chef Salar Madadi won the top prize with his Iron Sheik pizza: a Detroit-style square pie that draws influence from Persian flavours with toppings like pomegranate seeds, mint, kashk, walnuts, and an eggplant dip spread called kashk-e badamjan.
Similarly, Raman Chalal was on hand representing Cowabunga Pizza, pumping out one of the pizzeria’s iconic pies known for thoughtful recipes and chef-driven approaches, assembled using the highest quality ingredients.
MaiPai’s first place win was accompanied by a $5,000 cheque, a guaranteed entrance into the International Pizza Challenge at the 2024 Pizza Expo, and a countertop dough mixer. Cowabunga’s second place win earned them $3,000.
