Under the Covers

A look back at some of urbanicity Magazine’s notable covers

URBANICITY - MAY DEBUT ISSUE - FINAL
May 2011, Debut Issue
The very first issue of urbanicity Magazine was released in May 2011 as a black and white 30″ broadsheet. The entire issue had only 8 pates, and displayed the headshots of a roster of writers that supplied the majority of content fot the first year of publication. Because of the size of the page, five articles begin on the cover panel with teasers. A large full-width banner advertisement was placed at the bottom of the page for the first year.

JUNE 2011 -single page
June 2011
It was only the second issue of urbanicity Magazine, but this cover is perhaps the best-remembered image yet. The above fold photograph of actor Danny Trejo by Hamilton photographer Christopher Stacey captivated readers quickly. In fact, this issue is probably what attracted and cemented much of the base audience the magazine needed in the first year.

December 2012, First Home Delivery
Reigning as the most controversial cover in the history of the magazine, this visually beautiful but disturbing image of a woman shooting herself through the head inspired a lot of conversation locally. Too much, perhaps. Understandable, however, as this was also the first issue distributed directly to homes… 5000 homes to be exact. Let’s just say we had some letters to respond to after this one hit stands…

May 2014, Complete Redesign, Colour
After differences in ideology and direction emerged between Reg Beaudry (Editor and designer of the magazine at the time) and I, it wasn’t long before we amicably parted ways professionally. Upon taking over completely, I had the magazine redesigned by Jessica Johnstone, and added colour to the pages for the first time. The new product was released on the 3rd anniversary of the magazine.

September issue-PRINT-FILE-1
September 2015, The Influence Issue
I’ve always loved lists, especially when they’re ranked lists. A new editorial calendar introduced with Kristel Bulthuis as Editor, saw the September 2015 issue rank Hamilton’s 30 most influential people in what would become a planned annual feature. The list was chosen and ranked by an independent panel of community members, and stirred up a lot of healthy conversation locally! (Especially from those who felt they should be on the list!)

MAY2016-PRINT copy
May 2016, 5th Anniversary Redesign
The issue you’re holding is our most intentional cover design yet. In an experimental effort to redefine the boundaries of print media, we’ve opted to move away from typical cover images and headlines as the industry knows them. Instead, we’ve followed an internet-inspired content-first model, and have essentially moved our table of contents to our cover. Each month the cover colour changes, clearly telling readers that a new issue is out.
