Hamilton considers new Fare Assist program to address transit affordability

Hamilton is seeing public feedback on a potential Fare Assist program that could see fare for Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) transit reduced for eligible residents.

The program – which is proposed to run from January 1st, 2024 to June 30th, 2026 – would target lower income residents who fall under a certain family income threshold, providing a 30 per cent discount on single-ride PRESTO fares on HSR buses.

Fare Assist would benefit approximately 88,380 Hamilton residents based on 2021 census data, and those who live at or below the Low-Income Measure After-Tax (or, LIM-AT) could apply.

The proposed program has several new features and benefits that current programs don’t, including a pay-as-you-go option instead of a monthly pass, and free fare after the weekly cap of 11 paid trips is reached thanks to the HSR’s loyalty program.

Hamilton residents are asked to complete a short survey on the city website to offer feedback on the proposed Fare Assist program. Those who complete the survey will also be entered into a draw for a chance to win a $40 PRESTO travel card.
