Google Canada makes $2 million commitment to Hamilton

This past weekend, the Hamilton Public Library hosted a special event with Google entitled Grow with Google. At the event, it was announced that Google Canada has made the commitment to provide $2 million in grants to support digital skills training in Canada.

According to Donna Skelley, Hamilton businesses are struggling to find workers that have both the knowledge and experience needed to fill high-skilled positions. The number one issue, claims Skelley, is that people don’t have the appropriate digital skills.

To combat this, Google Canada will be partnering with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton Public Library, CoMotion Group and Canada Learning Code. With the help of these partners, Google Canada will introduce an IT Support Professional Certificate.

The goal of the certificate is to teach students the skills required to land entry-level information technology jobs. Google Canada estimates that participants will have a job in the field within eight months of completing the program.

Google Canada has even partnered with high-profile businesses (such as Walmart, RBC, Shopify and even Google) to guarantee students hands on work.

Anyone is able to apply for the program, even if your background isn’t in technology.

Hamilton was appealing to Google Canada staff due to our flourishing business scene and city pride. Not only are Hamiltonians ready to learn and take on new challenges, but we want to build and keep our businesses right here in the Hammer.

What do you think this partnership means for Hamilton? Are you interested in this certificate program? Let us know in the comments.
