Hamilton board game cafe Mancala Monk was broken into last night

In some dismaying local news, Hamilton’s largest board game café Mancala Monk was broken into and robbed last night.

Located at 1229 Cannon Street near the corner of Cannon and Ottawa, Mancala Monk is a beloved spot for coffee, beer, snacks, and a library of over 1000 board games for your playing pleasure.

The café’s front door was smashed overnight on February 17th, with both the cash register and money on premises stolen as well. As of now, no culprits have been publicly identified, and Mancala Monk remains open for business.

A post on Mancala Monk’s social media about the incident drew plenty of solidarity and community support.

“Our love and devotion to this city and this very community have strengthened even out of this unfortunate event, as we have genuinely felt the love and support from each and every one of you!” said Mancala Monk’s owners in the posting, while citing plenty of private messages and well-wishes sent their way from frequent Hamilton patrons.

The robbery at Mancala Monk comes not too long after a similar stream of break-ins at independent small businesses and shops in the International Village, including The Thrifty Designer, VintageSoulGeek, Café Oranje, and Vagabond Saints.
