A school in Hamilton’s lower city has shut down for in-person classes for a full week as of today amid a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has temporarily closed Dr. J. E Davey Elementary School, with students and staff shifting to a week of remote learning and a current plan to resume in-person classes as of next Monday.
“Due to the number of staff close contacts identified by Hamilton Public Health Services, the school is unable to provide appropriate staffing levels to ensure safety and support student programming,” reads a release on the HWDSB website.

The school’s COVID-19 outbreak was officially declared on March 18th, and is currently at a total of 4 known cases of the virus: three in students, and one in a staff member. This includes at least one confirmed instance of one of the new COVID-19 variants of concern.
“Safety continues to drive our school operation decisions as we respond to COVID-19 in our community,” says Manny Figueiredo, HWDSB Director of Education.
“While we want our students learning in person and at school, we have to be ready to pivot our learning model to manage school cases and respond to the impact on staffing levels.”
This also comes as a total of 50 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed within Hamilton’s elementary and secondary schools since this past Friday.
