Ontario announces plans to remove COVID-19 measures

The Ontario government has announced its plans to remove some province-wide protections against COVID-19.

Premier Doug Ford spoke on Monday morning to reveal the province’s plans to let go of measures originally instated to help limit the spread of COVID-19, including capacity limits and proof of vaccination requirements in select settings.

Beginning February 17th, capacity limits will be lifted in settings requiring proof of vaccination like restaurants, bars, fitness studios, cinemas, meeting and event spaces, and casinos.

Venues like concert venues, sports arenas, and live theatres will remain at 50 per cent capacity, and indoor capacity limits at higher risk venues like nightclubs, restaurants with dancing, and sex clubs will be raised to 25 per cent.

Then, further restrictions are set to be lifted as of March 1st, with all capacity limits lifted in all indoor public settings, and the province-wide proof of vaccination policy – which has been required for access to settings like restaurants, bars, cinemas, concert venues, live theatres, and more – will be lifted.

Businesses and other settings will still be able to enforce proof of vaccination on an individual basis.

Additionally, beginning February 18th, booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines will be made available to Ontarians aged 12 to 17, which can be booked through the province’s online booking portal and through select pharmacies.

Long-term management of COVID-19 in the province will be managed by local and regional responses as needed.
