Two Hamilton coffee shops win Canadian small business grants from FedEx

It’s a proud moment for Hamilton’s small businesses as not one, but two of the city’s favourite independent coffee shops are among 30 Canadian small businesses recognized by FedEx and selected to receive $5,000 grants in aid during the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those two shops are Steeltown Garage Co., a motorcycle-themed coffee shop at the corner of James North and Barton; and Detour Coffee, a staple of Downtown Dundas and well-loved coffee roaster and café.

Both businesses were applicants for FedEx’s #SupportSmall granting initiative: a $150,000 program dedicated to awarding exceptional small businesses across Canada as they work hard to stay afloat during the pandemic.

Other businesses selected for grant funding are situated across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and New Brunswick, from tiny towns to massive metro areas. With 15 of the grants in total awarded here in Ontario to businesses in numerous sectors, it’s particularly exciting to see two of those recipients be businesses from Hamilton.

In fact, FedEx even highlighted Steeltown Garage Co. in particular on their social media feed, praising them for their social advocacy efforts even in a time of hardship for the coffee shop itself.

“Despite closing its doors because of the pandemic, Steeltown Garage Co. has been using its loyal customer base to raise funds for anti-racism organizations,” explains FedEx on their Facebook page. “We’re excited to see this coffee & retail space reopen safely with help from the #SupportSmall Grant.”
