Hamilton is investing $3.6 million in air purification for city facilities

The City of Hamilton has announced its plans to invest $3.6 million into air purification improvements across city facilities.

The support comes through the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program as part of the COVID-19 resilience stream, and the city will be making these upgrades to help reduce airborne and surface contaminants in city buildings.

It’s an especially promising initiative given that COVID-19’s spread has shown to be primarily through airborne transmission, emphasizing the need for cleaner air in indoor public spaces to help reduce transmission of this highly contagious virus and others going forward.

Earlier in 2022, the city completed in-duct air purification installation at Macassa Lodge and Wentworth Lodge. Most recently, air purification upgrades were also made at City Hall, Lister Block, Provincial Offences Administration office, and the Red Hill Family Centre.

Remaining funds will be used by the city to upgrade air purification systems in other city-owned facilities, prioritizing areas that serve vulnerable populations, areas with high occupancies, and places that are higher risk for production of infectious aerosol particle generation like senior’s homes, recreation centres, and arenas.

All of these improvements are expected to be completed by December 2023.
