Burlington lift bridge is closing to vehicle traffic

The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge will be staying in the “up” position for the time being.

While this means that water vehicles may pass through the canal to and from the Hamilton Harbour, it also means vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians will be unable to cross over the bridge.

This is a main throughway for local habitants to cross from Hamilton into Burlington and now those wishing to do so will need to use the Skyway Bridge.

Those located along Eastport Drive or who take the HSR route 11 Parkdale to cross the lift bridge will have to allow extra time in their commutes to account for the rerouting.

Like other recent closures, it has proven difficult to keep staffing the bridge due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will still be someone available to assist navigation of vessels through the passage, but there will be no staff operating the lift itself.

While a formal media release is expected soon, it is not known when the bridge closure will commence (or end) since the Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority is still waiting on word from Public Works & Procurement Canada on the matter.

It is expected that they will hear some time today.
