Burlington looks to make the city more walkable

The City of Burlington is looking to ensure that residents have better walkable access to parks and green space.

Travelling by car, truck, or bus is almost essential to living in Burlington. But, the idea of the “15-minute city” is quickly gaining momentum where all essential needs of residents are only a 15-minute walk away.

According to City Councillor Paul Sharman in a report filed by Inside Halton, creating a community of green space being a walk away is still possible for the city.

However, there are a number of obstacles to increasing park land in Burlington with a lot of land not being owned by the city and mandatory population growth targets in place that require new more dense housing to be built.

One place the city is looking to guarantee more green space is to change the Parks and Recreation and Cultural Assets Master Plan and legislature that would require a certain percentage of new housing developments to be parkland.

Another hurdle for more parks is that not all city councillors are on board with changing the legislature to include walkable green space in every community.

The West-End Home Builders’ Association has called changes to the master plan premature with there being no official plan or complete understanding of future mandatory growth requirements.

A representative of the association said that some areas of Burlington, like the downtown, would result in incredibly small areas of green space because of the already limited availability of land.
