Nickel Brook Brewing in Burlington sees huge increase in sales for delivery and pick-up

With most people staying home, Nickel Brook Brewing Co. has seen an increase in online sales as they continue to provide craft beer to locals through delivery and retail pick-up services.

Delivery drivers are equipped with all the sanitary products they could need including sanitizer, masks, and gloves as they continue to ship out orders to people’s homes.

Extra precautions have also been made at the brewery and retail space with all the product removed from the front of the store, sanitized, and handled by as few people as possible, says brewery President and Co-Founder John Romano.

“Everything is off the floor. Customers are to approach the counter, say what they want, don’t move. My salesperson will grab it for you. Swipe your credit card, grab case, and go,” said Romano.

Earlier this week Nickel Brook made the difficult decision to close the tap room and leave only the retail space open. Romano said that the crowds that were flocking to the tap room last Saturday is what motivated him to close the service before Doug Ford made the announcement to close all restaurants and bars the following Monday.

“We were at capacity in the tap room on Saturday. I was clearing tables and cleaning glasses after every use. We even had to put out more tables and chairs.”

Romano intends to keep the retail space open as long as they can with only a closure of all non-essential stores and services forcing them to close the store’s doors.

However, even if the community is only left with essential stores in the next few weeks, Nickel Brook is still expected to fill beer fridges at the groceries stores that will remain open. So, production at the brewery will need to continue with an even stricter sanitary procedure in place.

Small businesses have been one of the hardest hit by the mandated closures and recommendations for residents to stay home to practice social distancing.

“Breweries like us will be fine, we’ve been pretty stable. I’ve been good with our money over the years, so we’ll probably make it. But, there are about 340 brewery licenses in Ontario and 250 of them are very small selling beer out their front door. And I worry for them,” said Romano.

Online orders for Nickel Brook Brewing Co. can be made through their website. Beer lovers are encouraged to visit the website of their favourite independent breweries to find out if they are offering online deliveries or pick-ups as everyone continues to stay home.
