When will Burlington’s beach reopen?

Along with many other public spaces, Burlington’s beach is currently closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; and it looks like the area might not reopen for a while.

Although some parks and skateparks have been allowed to reopen, the province still has mandated that Ontario’s beaches remain closed through its emergency orders.

According to the City of Burlington website, water testing at the beach has not continued as those staff have been working in other areas to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.

If the province were to ease the restrictions placed on Ontario beaches, the Region of Halton would need to commence testing of the water for bacteria to determine whether it’s safe to enter.

Also, Burlington’s beach has not been groomed for safe use and park washroom facilities remain closed.

So, if the province was to lift the restriction on the use of beaches, it could be weeks before the Region of Halton could get Burlington’s beach into safe condition for visitors.

On Monday, bylaw officers showed up at Burlington’s beach with bullhorns in order to disperse about 100 people hanging around the area. With temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius that day, there had been an increase in locals looking to sit in the sand and get a tan.

Officers showed up after multiple complaints were made about overcrowding on the beach. Whether people are following physical distancing guidelines, going to the beach is a violation of the March 30th COVID-19 declaration of emergency, which closed all Ontario beaches.

With the required closure and steps in order to create a safe space, Burlington’s beach could be closed for a chunk of the summer.
