The City of Hamilton will be installing 10 new pedestrian crossovers this year in addition to the existing 21 locations already in the city.
The new 10 crossovers will be funded “using $400,000 from revenue raised by red light camera violations”, reports Joey Coleman from The Public Record.
While the new crossovers will be a great addition to the city, it still leaves 99 other identified locations to be postponed for 2019 onward.
If you’re unfamiliar with how pedestrian crossovers operate, they are crosswalks marked by signs and road paint where a driver must fully stop before the painted “shark teeth” to give right of way to pedestrians when present. Only once the pedestrian fully crosses can vehicles go back in motion.
Many crossovers are now equipped with flashing lights that are activated by pedestrians as an additional way to grab drivers’ attention.
A more detailed explanation can be found in the following video by the City of Hamilton.
