A stunning new watch company has launched in Hamilton

There’s something to be said for a beautiful watch.
Sure, we can all readily check the time on our phones; but those hunks of plastic and metal will never replace the simple aesthetic pleasures of a well-crafted timepiece.
That philosophy is certainly at the heart of Locke & King: a new Hamilton micro-brand dedicated to lovingly designed watches and other sleek, sophisticated accessories like sunglasses and leather-bound notebooks.
The brand is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Ryan Moran and is named for the Locke Street and King Street intersection right here in the Hammer.
Specializing in watches designed and built with “classic inspiration and modern touches,” Locke & King has been teasing its forthcoming product and acquainting locals with the brand since the middle of last year.
The wait for the company’s first watch is finally over, with Locke & King debuting their first timepiece – dubbed The James – via social media on Monday.

The watch looks gorgeous: classic and understated, yet totally eye-catching and clearly crafted with a fine attention to detail.
But on top of all of that, The James was designed with a loving focus on tying it to Hamilton’s identity, taking inspiration from James North’s history as an entry point and railway connection to the city.
“For design we drew from the heritage of railroad watches, with a hint of field watch, for their connection to the history of the street,” reads a note on Locke & King’s website.
“Like the street and city, the coin edge, ridged bezel offers a certain sophistication while literally being ‘a little rough around the edges.’ Meanwhile the subtle sectored dial design references the classic clock of Hamilton’s old city hall, a fixture of the street for over 130-years, now located in the City Centre clock tower.”
