Amazon to open delivery station in Cambridge

Amazon, the world’s largest online store, announced that they will be opening a new 136,000 square foot delivery station just a short drive away from Hamilton in the north end of Cambridge.

According to a news release from the City of Cambridge, Amazon will be repurposing an old industrial space at 125 Maple Grove Road with plans to open before the end of 2020.

Amazon’s new delivery station will also create hundreds of jobs in the area with the Cambridge mayor Kathryn McGarry saying she was “delighted” by the decision to open the facility.

“Cambridge has a skilled workforce and is centrally located with easy access to Highway 401, so it’s not surprising that Amazon has selected Cambridge as the location for its next project,” said Mayor McGarry.

Delivery stations are often used by Amazon as one of the final steps before the package arrives at the customer’s home. Packages are often transported from fulfillment and sorting centres to delivery stations.

Amazon also works with many independent contractors for delivery services, which also opens another source of new jobs in the Cambridge area. Job postings for the new location have already started to appear on the Amazon website.

There hasn’t been any financial information released from the City of Cambridge or Amazon in regard to the construction and running of the new delivery centre.

The old industrial building used to be home to the former transportation company Transfreight Inc.
