Another Hamilton motorist has been charged with stunt driving

Looks like some Hamiltonians still aren’t getting the message about reckless driving while traffic is diminished during COVID-19, because another local motorist was charged with stunt driving this past Thursday.

According to reports, the driver, a 31 year-old male, was caught by officers while driving 120 km/h in a 50 km/h zone around the King Street and Macklin Street North area.

Hamilton Police were already on site conducting speed enforcement and pulled the offending driver over. The man was charged with stunt driving and other speed violations, with his vehicle impounded and license suspended for seven days.

This incident is one of numerous in the city since COVID-19 emergency orders were put in place on March 17th, with a total 805 charges laid by Hamilton police for speeding – including 27 charges for stunt driving – over the span of only two weeks.

The increase in stunt driving offences has been attributed in part to the fact that many roadways and parking lots are clear and vacant amid the mass shutdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Hamilton Police – who are cracking down on speeders amid these recent increases of reckless driving – have stressed that these unusual conditions are not an excuse to ignore traffic laws.
