BREAKING: Hamilton’s escarpment stairs are now closed during COVID-19

With many Hamiltonians still ignoring constant urgings to refrain from non-essential travel, the city has officially closed access to all sets of escarpment stairs.

Though the push for citywide social distancing has been strong amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, Hamilton residents nonetheless continued to flock to Hamilton’s numerous sets of escarpment stairs, climbing and descending the steps for exercise; especially as the weather outside continues to improve each day.

With no shortage of locals still joining each other in large numbers within close proximity on the stairs – not to mention most people repeatedly touching the stairs’ communal handrails – the City of Hamilton made the official call to close the stairs today, effective immediately.

“The message regarding non-essential travel on Hamilton’s escarpment stairs was sent but not completely adhered to,” explained the City of Hamilton in a tweet.

The news follows the announcement that all of Hamilton’s COVID-19 restrictions will remain in place until May 25th at the earliest, with the escarpment stairs joining the list of local closures until further notice.
