In a considerable financial move this morning by the Canadian government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that emergency funding for Canadians during the COVID-19 outbreak will now come in the form of a $2,000 per month benefit.
This new streamlined model, called the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, replaces the two emergency funds previously announced as part of the federal government’s $82 billion emergency aid package.
Canadian workers who are facing coronavirus-related work issues will be able to receive $2,000 per month for up to 4 months. This will revert to standard EI after 4 months if eligible recipients are still out of work at that time.

Workers laid off or seeing reduced hours and pay due to COVID-19 will qualify for this benefit, as well as those who are self-employed, sick, quarantined, parents with sick family members, and those with children who are currently at home due to school and daycare closures.
If Canadian workers who have been laid off have already applied for EI as a result of COVID-19, those applicants will automatically get the $2,000 benefit for up to 4 months in lieu of standard EI benefits.
Applications for the new Canada Emergency Response Benefit are expected to be available on April 6th.
