Canadaland podcast analyzes Hamilton’s abandoned LRT project

Canadaland’s spinoff podcast Wag The Doug released an episode this week that analyzes the impacts of the Ford government abandoning the LRT project in Hamilton

The Canadaland podcast is hosted by Queen’s Park Today publisher Allison Smith and Canadaland news editor Jonathan Goldsbie as they analyze different newsworthy events of Doug Ford’s current time as the Premier of Ontario.

Monday’s episode took a closer look at the Ford government abruptly cancelling the LRT project after a decade of planning and $110 million already spent.

Featured in the episode are Hamilton city councillors Nrinder Nann and Maureen Wilson as well as long time Queen’s Park pundit Keith Leslie.

The episode includes interviews of Hamilton City Councillors who represent wards that were most impacted by the decision to cancel the project.

“The fact that they didn’t want the public to be at that media advisory as well I think for a lot of Hamiltonians and a lot of residents felt like a total slap in the face and very disrespectful,” said councillor Nann in the podcast referring to how the Ford government released the news of the cancellation.

She said that the public did not feel engaged in the process and they were told they couldn’t be there and she described feelings of disrespect and shock felt by many Hamiltonians

“Many Hamiltonians voted in this previous municipal election for candidates who were pro-LRT including our mayor.”

Canadaland is a news site and podcast network that is funded by its audience. The site has a primary focus on Canadian media, news, current affairs and politics.

The Ford government abruptly cancelled the LRT project in December 2019 and it has since become national news due to the government’s suspect approach to the cancellation with zero communication with the Hamilton government.
