City of Hamilton quizzes residents on proper toilet procedure

Are you up to date with proper toilet use guidelines? Are you confident in your ability to discern between ‘safe to flush’ and ‘potential plumbing problem’? Well today’s your lucky day, as the City of Hamilton has just put out the perfect quiz to test your knowledge.

As a follow-up to their popular ‘Own Your Throne’ campaign, the city is asking residents to complete a short survey to measure the campaign’s success. ‘Own Your Throne’ was a public outreach initiative meant to educate the public about what is and isn’t suitable to flush down toilets. The campaign’s lighthearted-yet-informational approach resonated well with viewers and became a viral success, reaching upwards of 150 000 views on YouTube.

The campaign, which reportedly cost $40 000, was launched to reduce the amount of non-flushable items turning up at the city’s water treatment facility. While its an issue that generally flies under the radar, it can cost a lot of time and effort dealing with problems caused by flushing non-toilet-friendly items such as cigarette butts, food waste, and the pet goldfish your little brother begged three months for and then lost within a week because he forgot to feed it.

Despite the seriousness of maintaining city sewer systems for public health and safety, city officials enlisted the help of three cartoon characters to work around our bathroom talk taboos and get the message across in a comfortable way.

By teaching us about the ‘3 P’s’ rule of flushability (pee, poo, and toilet paper), Richard the Turd, Sir Peeter, and the Duchess of Swirl have done their part to keep Hamilton’s drains and pipes unclogged. Are you doing yours?

You can find a link to the survey here.
