Condition of Hamilton beaches remains questionable

With the weather warming up, Hamiltonians are looking for ways to enjoy the summer months by spending some time outside.

One of the most fun ways to soak up the sun is a day trip to the beach. Unfortunately for us, the list of available Hamilton beaches to swim at is dwindling due to bacteria.

Plagued with high E. coli levels and blue-green algae, the beach at Bayfront Park will remain closed for the third summer in a row. Despite the efforts made by Public Health Services, there is no telling when or if the beach will be safe for swimmers again.

Other Hamilton beaches may face the same fate as Bayfront Park.

Pier 4 Park beach has been subject to potentially toxic algae and pollution. In a test conducted last year, results showed that the water at Pier 4 beach was safe for swimmers only 30 per cent of the time.

The beach at Pier 4 Park will remain open this year. Reports suggest to shut the beach down in 2019 if no significant improvements are made.

Hamilton’s six other beaches remain open this year, but their fate remains in the air. Last year, those beaches were closed for a combined total of 57 days. Like Bayfront Park and Pier 4, they also faced high levels of E. coli and blue-green algae.

Before taking a dip this summer, always check the water conditions. Obey all posted signage and trust your instincts. Stay safe — if your closest beach is closed, there are plenty of other things to do in the city.

Which beaches will you be visiting this summer? What are your favourite ways to cool down? Let us know in the comments.
