Emergency roadwork starting tonight for Main Street West

Crews will begin emergency resurfacing work on the eastbound lanes of Main Street West this evening around 7 p.m.. The announcement was made in early March, shortly after the city surpassed their annual pothole complaint record before the end of February.

The eastbound lanes of Main Street West between Cootes Drive and the Highway 403 ramps near Newton Avenue will receive a “shave and pave” treatment, where the top two inches of the existing pavement is milled away and new asphalt is put back on top.

Work will commence in the two curb lanes at Cootes Drive, moving eastbound toward the 403. The work is expected to be completed by Friday, March 16.

The City is prepared to spend as much as $400,000 to fix Main Street West.

“Thank you to residents and motorists for your patience as staff work to repair asphalt badly damaged by this winter’s extreme weather fluctuations,” said City of Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger. “We are continuing to take immediate and longer term steps to alleviate and repair this serious issue.”

Motorists and HSR customers on routes 1A King, 5 Delaware, 51 University, and 10 Beeline may experience delays in the area.

If you see a pothole that needs fixing, you can contact the City’s Customer Service Contact Centre during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at 905-546-CITY (2489). They’ll need the location (street addresses or intersections) and estimated size of the pothole.
