Farm Boy is being bought out

Back in March, Farm Boy opened its first and only Hamilton location. Not only has the grocery chain been a massive success in Hamilton, but its done exceptionally well across all of its 26 Ontario locations.

Empire Co. Ltd., the parent company of Sobeys Inc., has taken note of its success, officially reaching a deal to acquire Farm Boy in a bid to expand its provincial reach.

Once Farm Boy is in the hands of Empire Co. Ltd., the plan is to speed up the grocery chain’s growth across markets like Toronto and southwestern Ontario.

While an exact timeline hasn’t been set, we can expect to see both new sites and existing Sobeys locations turning into Farm Boys across the GTA in the near future.

As of today, Farm Boy is valued at $800 million. Once Empire Co. Ltd. officially takes over Farm Boy, the company will work towards doubling the size of the grocery chain’s business.

Farm Boy products will also be added to Sobeys’ online grocery platform that’s set to launch in 2020. The Ocado-based e-commerce business will launch first in the GTA.
