First COVID-19 vaccine handed out in Hamilton

An employee at Parkview Nursing Home was the first person to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in Hamilton.

Wednesday December 23rd saw a unique day in the history of the city with about 30 employees at long-term care homes being vaccinated.

The first vaccination was followed by a standing applause and a small dose of cautious optimism.

Hamilton received about 6,000 doses of the vaccine in its first shipment that will make about 3,000 people immune to the virus that’s been spreading all over the globe since the beginning of 2020.

A full first day of vaccinations will be following by other rounds of employees at long-term care facilities also receiving the jab over the next few weeks.

Although local media were not permitted to attend the event in person, health officials held a virtual media briefing after the interior injection.

The first round of vaccination centres are not open to the public with information about their location being kept incredibly quietly.

Merdina Nangle-Palmer, who is a personal support worker and chief steward at Parkview Nursing Centre, was the first to receive the COVID vaccine.
