Gage Park’s new tropical greenhouse expected for fall 2018

Renovations are still going strong at Gage Park’s new tropical greenhouse, despite this winter’s unpredictable weather. The park’s latest greenhouse should be open to the public by autumn.
The City of Hamilton’s Public Works department officially broke ground on the project in July 2017 and has been keeping the city updated on their progress, as well as what we can expect the greenhouse to offer by the time it opens.
“The new building at the Gage Park Greenhouses will provide the community, and especially young people, an opportunity to experience and learn about plants and nature, and the building promises to be a great asset in our community and city,” said John McNally, chairman of the foundation’s board.
The greenhouse will boast 13,600 square-feet and is going to feature attractions like a sub-tropical environment, exotic free-flying birds, fish ponds, plants, while even acting as a community gathering place.
Sub-tropical environments are located near and around the equator so the public can expect a comfortable, humid environment that will help the foliage and plant-life within the greenhouse to thrive, as well as be a comfortable place to escape the heat.
“One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that its design is centred on community programming, access, and education,” Ward 3 Councillor Matthew Green said in a statement last year. “When complete, the Gage Park Community Greenhouse will grow beyond a local oasis into a regional attraction.”
For the time being, the greenhouse is still open during the construction. Its most recent event, the Spring Tide Bulb Show, just wrapped up its week-long display on Sunday.
Gage Park is a large park nestled right in the Delta West neighbourhood of Hamilton where families spend time together, bands play at the ampitheatre, festivals and scheduled events are held and more.
