Hamilton actor Nick Cordero wakes up from coma after weeks-long battle with COVID-19

Nearly six weeks into an unfathomably intense battle with COVID-19, most of which has been spent in a medically-induced coma, Hamilton-born actor Nick Cordero has finally woken up and is now on the slow but sure path to recovery.

The 41 year-old Broadway star and Tony Award nominee was in otherwise good health before testing positive for COVID-19; a diagnosis that saw him admitted to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

The virus led to a massive list of complications including severe lung infection and damage, multiple mini strokes, internal bleeding, and blood clots that all saw Cordero undergo multiple attempts at treatment; including being on a ventilator to aid with breathing and an ECMO machine to assist with blood oxygenation.

Eventually, after surgeries that attempted to save it, Cordero’s right leg needed to be amputated as the result of multiple blood clots.

Through this touch-and-go situation with endless setbacks, it has been unclear whether or not Cordero would ultimately win the battle in his critical condition.

However, though in a severely weakened state, the Westdale Secondary School graduate has opened his eyes and is responding to commands for the first time in weeks, indicating that he is on the gradual path to recovery.

The long and devastating ordeal has been documented in ongoing detail by Cordero’s wife, fitness instructor Amanda Kloots, who has been rallying fans and friends worldwide to cheer Nick on from afar with the hashtag #WakeUpNick.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up for Cordero, Kloots, and their 10 month-old son Elvis. The fundraiser has already raised well over $500,000 with more donations pouring in by the day.
