Hamilton artists support a refugee family with an online art auction

Still have some Christmas shopping to do? Well, a special online auction featuring the works of more than 50 of Hamilton’s established and emerging artists might be the perfect place to finish your gift-getting, while also supporting a newly-arrived refugee family.
The auction is called Just Art, and it features a wide variety of unique, locally-crafted pieces of art by an exciting list of Hamilton artists including Lee Munn, E. Robert Ross, Sandee Ewasiuk, and Tom Wilson of Lee Harvey Osmond.

Even better than the opportunity to get your hands on some unique local art pieces is the opportunity to support an Iranian family – a mother and two daughters – who were among the first to arrive in Canada as refugees in September following an immigration suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Community members and a volunteer group from Hamilton’s Church of St. John the Evangelist will be supporting the family in their first year in Canada, helping them with housing, health care access, and language classes.
Funds raised for the family by the Just Art auction will support the first year of costs such as rent, groceries, and other essential needs while they find their footing.
“It’s been challenging to undertake the many necessary settlement tasks in the midst of a pandemic, but we are wrapping our arms around the family as best we can,” said host committee member Sarah Wayland.
“We’d been looking for pandemic-friendly ideas for fundraising, and decided that a focus on art was fitting as the women are all artistic themselves. Each of them created art as an outlet during the time they waited to be resettled in Canada.”
The dozens of stunning works of art available for the auction include paintings, jewelry, stoneware, and even handmade iPad folios and dolls.
Bids can be placed starting today, December 4th, and continue through to December 10th. Those who win an item in the online auction will be notified following its completion and will have 24 hours to confirm and make payment.
