Hamilton staying in COVID-19 red zone, will not move into lockdown

Despite speculation that Hamilton is on the brink of a fuller lockdown amid rapidly rising COVID-19 caseloads, the province has said the city will be staying in the red “control” zone for now.

The news comes following an update Friday afternoon from the Ontario government where it was announced that three regions will be moving to different zones of the province’s new tiered COVID-19 restrictions plan, with Hamilton remaining in the red zone for at least the next 28 days.

However, this doesn’t mean that Hamilton isn’t still at risk of a fuller lockdown, which would see tighter restrictions on health & safety guidelines and further closures of businesses including restaurant dining rooms, bars, gyms, and retail.

Hamilton’s health minister Dr. Elizabeth Richardson has said that a continually concerning rise of COVID-19 cases in the city would “without a doubt” lead to a lockdown.

Locals are advised to be diligent about the existing health measures including staying home when possible, not gathering with those outside your household, wearing a mask while in public spaces, frequently washing your hands, and not going out if you feel sick.

Hamilton’s most recent daily case update from Thursday reported 69 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city, bringing the total of known active cases to 561 and the overall total since the pandemic began to 3,360.

Notably, the city broke its own record for new daily COVID-19 cases with 108 cases confirmed in a single day earlier this week.
