Hamilton Community Food Centre hosts creative writing contest

When we’re getting to know someone, we often ask the same set of questions. What kind of music do you like? Do you have any pets? What’s your favourite food? When the person gives their answer, they usually don’t give details – their favourite meal might be tacos, but we never really find out why.

This month, The Hamilton Community Food Centre is hosting a creative writing contest to challenge this lack of details.

Food for Thought is a writing contest that asks teens ages 13 to 18 to share what their favourite meal is.

In 250 to 500 words, Neighbour to Neighbour is encouraging teens to not only say what the meal is, but to describe it using their senses. How does it smell, look and taste? What ingredients were used? Who cooked the meal and whom did they share it with?

The goal of this contest is to not only encourage youth to write creatively, but also to talk about food in a way that’s unconventional.

Cooking, eating and food in general is something to feel excited about. There’s so much passion in culinary arts; let your passion guide you in sharing all of the joys your favourite meal brings.

Entries can be written through poetry or prose. All entries must be double spaced, written in 12-point type using the Times New Roman font. There is a limit of one entry per person.

All submissions must be sent by e-mail to dboissoneau@n2ncentre.com. All entries must be received by August 17 at 4 pm. Please include the writer’s name, age, phone number, city and e-mail address.

The winner will be announced at a coffee house at the Limeridge Road West food centre on August 24, between 6 pm and 8 pm. The winner will receive a $50 gift card from Indigo.

What’s your favourite meal? Let us know in the comments below.
