Hamilton expects 100,000+ visitors for 2024 Solar Eclipse

Hamilton’s population is expected to significantly – and temporarily – increase Monday afternoon in anticipation of the 2024 Solar Eclipse

The Hammer is one of few Ontario cities in the path of totality, making it a prime spot to catch the total solar eclipse in a special, once-in-a-lifetime celestial event.

Locals can expect higher levels of foot and vehicle traffic as an estimated 100,000+ additional people visit the city today to take in the solar eclipse.

The bump in people almost pales in comparison to the influx expected in Niagara this afternoon, with that region expecting up to one million visitors and therefore declaring a State of Emergency.

However, the event may end up being a tad anticlimactic, with a cloudy forecast throughout Monday meaning the eclipse may be hidden from view at various periods.

Our fingers are crossed that the view is relatively clear at the fleeting time of the total eclipse, which will occur around 3:18 pm and last for roughly 90 seconds.

The partial eclipse will be available to view just after 2 pm and will end at approximately 4:31 pm.

Locals are urged to experience the solar eclipse safely using certified ISO 12312-2 viewing glasses. Viewing the eclipse without proper eye protection carries significant safety risks with the potential to cause temporary or permanent eye damage.
