Hamilton Fire responds to overnight house explosion

The Hamilton Fire Department is investigating after an overnight explosion completely destroyed a home residence on the city’s west mountain.

Hamilton Fire was on the scene overnight at the destroyed residence at 279 Bonaventure Drive to investigate, and tweeted out images of the incident at 11:16 pm on the evening of Friday, April 16th.

“Our crews are attending a multiple alarm for a house explosion in the Upper Paradise and Hadeland area,” reads a message on the Hamilton Fire Department’s Twitter account.

“House has completely collapsed with no fire. Crews are checking and evacuating nearby houses. Crews will be on scene throughout the night.”

Hamilton Fire has also said that the explosion did some damage to nearby houses, and a search of the property found no one on site and no injuries. Crews on the scene also noted a strong smell of natural gas.

Responses on Twitter from locals living near the site of the incident indicate just how powerful the explosion was.

“I felt the explosion. My whole house shook,” said Twitter user and Hamilton resident @TsCreativePhoto.

“One block away and it felt like a vacuum in my house. Pretty scary scene,” added neighbourhood resident @rvwithkidsintow.

More on this as the Hamilton Fire Department provides further updates.
