Hamilton’s long-troubled Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is officially back on the table with $1 billion in support from the province.
Officials from the Ford government have said they will be submitting a shorter, more condensed version of the Hamilton LRT project for consideration for federal funding support, requesting $1.5 billion in federal dollars to supplement $1 billion on offer from the province.
A critical city building project – Hamilton LRT is back on table with a renewed $1 billion commitment from province for a shorter line (McMaster University to Gage Park). But is contingent on Feds stepping up to invest $1.5 billion. #ONpoli #HamONThttps://t.co/lOFrtvdphj

The LRT project is one of the Ford government’s five ‘priority projects’ being submitted to the Feds for additional funding support. If the Canadian government denies the request for funding, the province will instead make moves on a potential bus rapid transit program for Hamilton instead.
The news comes more than a year after the provincial government unceremoniously pulled the plug on Hamilton’s original LRT Project, citing budgetary concerns as a key reason for the decision.
A proposal for a shortened version of Hamilton LRT would run 9 kilometres instead of the originally proposed 14 kilometres, now likely running between McMaster University and the Gage Park area.
Updates on the new LRT project and potential funding support from the federal government are still to come.
