Hamilton LRT route will no longer include new bridge over Highway 403

Changes are being made to the planned 14 km route for Hamilton’s forthcoming Light Rail Transit (LRT) system.

A release from Metrolinx explains that the LRT route will be refined thanks to the City of Hamilton’s plans to convert Main Street from one-way to two-way traffic.

This means the previously-planned LRT-only bridge over Cathedral Park and the reconstruction of the Longwood Road bridge will no longer be required.

Instead, the construction plans will now include a reconstruction of the Main Street bridge over Highway 403 to enable future highway widening; reconstruction of the Main Street bridge over CP tracks; reconstruction of the Highway 403 ramps; and reconstruction of Frid Street including roadway and utility replacement.

“Ultimately, this design refinement will contribute to positive outcomes for the community including environmental sustainability, the reconstruction of aging infrastructure, helping to realize the two-way conversion of Main Street and improve LRT operations, all while saving time and money,” reads the release from Metrolinx.

It’s taken Metrolinx 13 years to finally find a route for the LRT to cross the 403.
