As Hamilton’s many restaurants, bars, and cafes look ahead to a very tenuous and potentially devastating future amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the city is looking into unique means of allowing patios to continue operating through the winter and all the way up to Fall 2021.
City council’s planning committee will soon discuss extending the city’s existing patio and dining district initiatives to October 31st of 2021 to help soften the financial blows being faced by the city’s hospitality industry at the hands of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I’ve had a few inquiries recently about Hamilton’s temporary outdoor patio program. At the Planning Committee meeting on October 6, committee will consider a staff report to extend the program through the winter and next summer. pic.twitter.com/kk4yu3AMNo

To help create outdoor patios that are more built for year-round patronage, options being considered that will help winterize patio spaces include outdoor heating equipment as well as temporary tents.
These outdoor dining districts were initially instated to allow restaurants in Hamilton to spill patio seating out into roads, laneways, and parking lots to accommodate a higher volume of distanced diners in a decidedly safer setting; especially given findings related to COVID-19 that show the virus has greater potential of spreading in enclosed indoor spaces with stale air.
This summer, 150 of Hamilton’s restaurants, bars, and cafes took advantage of the lifeline of extending their patio seating or spilling their service into an adjacent outdoor dining district seating.
Hamilton city council is set to discuss the issue on Tuesday.
