Hamilton nurse launches fundraiser to feed people in need and save local restaurants

After Hamilton entered the red zone a few weeks ago, local nurse Julie Freeman set out to make a difference this holiday season.

She launched Feast in the Hammer, a GoFundMe campaign that is raising money to help feed vulnerable residents as well as help save some of Hamilton’s most beloved restaurants.

Feast in the Hammer has partnered local restaurants and charitable organizations to deliver meals to families and residents in need.

After donations are gathered and meal recipients are identified, Freeman groups them by location and dietary restrictions before ordering bulk take-out at each restaurant.

“The holidays can be such an uncertain time for so many, and with the added impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought this would be a great way to support two important causes with one campaign,” said Freeman.

“I’m really excited about the possibility of someone picking up the model in another city, and to potentially keep this going beyond just the holiday season. To expand on this and pay it forward would be incredible.”

Feast in the Hammer has already raised more than $5000 in support of the growing number of participating restaurants and provided meals to more than 30 families.

Some of the restaurants and organizations currently involved include Cause & Effect Kitchen and Bar, Duke’s Pub Pasta and Pizzeria, MaiPai Tiki Bar, Merk Snack Bar, One Duke, Good Shepherd Family Centre, and The Mark Preece Family House.
