In response to a rise in traffic-related issues within the city, the Hamilton Police have launched a new centralized Traffic Safety Unit in collaboration with the city’s Strategic Road Safety Committee and the Transportation Operations & Maintenance Division.
The unit, which consists of 20 members from the Hamilton police force, operates 7 days a week with increased police presence across the city, and has been launched with the goal of reducing accidents such as collisions, injuries, and deaths for local motorists.

This is yet another piece of the city’s Vision Zero initiative for increased road safety in Hamilton, which was originally launched by the city in 2019.
“Hamilton Police Service encourages roadway users to remember that traffic safety in our community requires the commitment and active participation of all stakeholders,” said Hamilton Police Superintendent Marty Schulenberg.
“The importance of traffic safety in our city has been heard loud and clear, and the Traffic Safety Unit is a strategic investment in the day-to-day safety of our communities. We look forward to making a real difference on our roadways because traffic safety matters.”
The key approach of the new Hamilton Police Traffic Safety Unit is a focus on increased visibility, education, and enforcement alongside the city’s established safety programs.
The unit will also be a means of better equipping Hamilton Police in addressing unsafe and aggressive offences from local drivers that put other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists at greater risk.
