Hamilton Public Library hits 1 million checkouts of digital books in 2020

“Hamilton is a city of readers!”

Lisa Weaver, Director of Collections at the Hamilton Public Library (HPL), is talking about the fact that the library hit a major milestone recently by reaching a record-breaking number of checkouts for eBooks and audiobooks.

With over one million digital book checkouts reached before the end of 2020 alone, the milestone highlights not only how important literature is to the city’s residents, but also the increasing value of access to digital mediums for reading, such as eBooks and audiobooks; especially in the year of a global pandemic.

The Hamilton Public Library also released their lists of the most borrowed eBook and audiobook titles from the library’s digital collection in 2020, for which the novel Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice took the number one slot for eBooks and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone took number one in audiobooks.

Other familiar titles, including Becoming by Michelle Obama and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, are also among the most borrowed eBook titles.

Weaver also noticed some other particularly heartening trends among the digital books borrowed this year. “In 2020, library members also asked for more Canadian authors, Indigenous titles, and diverse voices for youth and adults,” she explains.

Notably, the milestone also makes the Hamilton Public Library one of the world’s top public library systems in total digital circulation.
