Hamilton public school teachers to start work-to-rule job action

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board elementary and secondary teachers will join the rest of Ontario’s public school teachers and start work-to-rule campaigns on Tuesday.

The work-to-rule campaign means that teachers in elementary and secondary schools will not be performing some administrative duties.

The unions representing both secondary and elementary school teachers across the province says that months of contract talks with the government have produced little progress.

Some tasks that teachers will stop performing include putting comments on report cards, attending certain meetings and participating in standardized testing.

Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation president Harvey Bischof says that nothing will change in the quality of the learning environment for students.

Talks between the union and the Ontario government are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Bischof says escalating the strike after that is possible.

The Ontario government announced in the spring that they would increase secondary class sizes from 22 to 28 students over the next four years and secondary students would require four online credits to graduate. During the talks, the government has scaled back class sizes to 25 and dropped the e-learning requirements to two courses.
