The Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation (OSSTF) proposed a one-day strike for Wednesday, December 4th that would close many schools across Ontario including public high schools in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and some schools in the Catholic District School Board.

The strike would go ahead if there isn’t a deal reached between the OSSTF and the province before Wednesday. This job action follows six days of information pickets and limited withdrawal of administrative services that began last Tuesday.
The OSSTF will be picketing outside select Hamilton schools announced by the Hamilton and District Labour Council on Twitter. The specific schools being affected by the potential job action including Ancaster High, Bernie Custis Secondary, Dundas Valley Secondary, Orchard Park Secondary, Sir Allan MacNab Secondary, Westmount Secondary, Westdale Secondary, and Waterdown Secondary.

The strike would see many secondary schools close down, but elementary schools, licensed childcare centres, before and after school programs, and EarlyON child and family centres would remain open.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will close the St. Charles Adult and Continuing Education Centres. However, all Catholic school will remain open because Ontario Catholic teachers are not members of the OSSTF. Their members voted 97% in favour of a strike and are moving closer to a legal strike position.
The issue at hand is about the increased class sizes, according to the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board chair Alex Johnstone.
The board is encouraging parents and guardians to be informed and speak out about students potentially losing opportunities for their future due to oversized classes.
