Hamilton receives $26.7 million in federal funding to build affordable housing

The City of Hamilton just received $26.7 million from the federal government to support the construction of new affordable housing.

A media release explains that the funding will support three key projects with a combined estimated 109 new affordable homes expected to be built.

The first project is the Good Shepherd at 35 Arkledun Avenue, which will see a former commercial school converted into 73 units that will specifically target women, trans folks, and non-binary folks experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.

Then there’s CityHousing Hamilton’s project at 253 King William Street, with 24 expected units for women and their children, as well as Black Canadians, experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Finally, there’s the St. Matthew’s House project at 412 Barton Street East, featuring 12 new units targeted towards Black Canadians and Indigenous people.

According to the release, all of these units are expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
