Hamilton sees uptick in COVID-19 cases among local children and teens

As the city continues to confirm new cases of COVID-19, Hamilton is seeing a particular trend in new confirmed cases among some of the city’s younger residents; particularly, the age 10 to 19 category.

Within the last 10 days, 27 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed by public health in the city. Half of those cases have been found in children and teens between the ages of 10 and 19; a trend the city’s medical officer of health attributes to spread within families.

In the month of August alone, Hamilton confirmed 91 new COVID-19 cases locally, which is almost double what the city saw in July with just 52 cases confirmed.

As of today, there are 73 known active cases of the virus in the city. By comparison, the city had less than 20 known active cases at the end of July.

On top of the general relaxing of restrictions amid Stage Three of Hamilton’s reopening, the overall uptick in COVID-19 cases could also point to an increasingly lax approach to safety protocols, such as physical distancing, wearing masks in public spaces, regularly washing hands, and only socializing with those in your 10-person social bubble.

The trend of new cases among youth is also a particularly ominous one as the province of Ontario prepares for a return to school in a matter of days; an event that is strongly predicted to lead to further increase of new cases, though many students in the Hamilton public school board are opting into a safer virtual learning model for the time being.
