Merriam-Webster dictionary chooses the Word of the Year for 2020

With plenty of new words and terms being introduced during the coronavirus outbreak, such as physical distancing and anti-masker, Merriam-Webster went with one word that best sums up 2020.

The world’s top-selling dictionary chose the word “pandemic” as the word of the year following a year of staying home, avoiding contact with others, and adjusting to a temporary “new normal.”

It was back in January that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of COVID-19 was a global health emergency.

Then, in March, the pandemic started to advance more drastically, including in areas like Hamilton and Burlington.

Schools across Ontario started with an extended spring break that eventually lasted until the end of the school year.

Non-essential services were shutdown and thousands of people were locked down at home waiting for the pandemic to pass.

Although 2020 will likely end a little differently from how it started, the word “pandemic” will be on the mind of everyone who has made it through this difficult year.
