Hamilton is making strides to make sure the city celebrates Pride all year long.
On June 18, Mayor Fred Eisenberger introduced a motion regarding coloured crosswalks over on Twitter. Now, the city’s Public Works committee will soon be installing rainbow crosswalks at two different downtown locations.
#HamOnt I was proud to introduce a motion today at Public Works committee requesting a rainbow crosswalk across from City Hall at Main Street West at Summers Lane, & Forsythe & Sterling, in recognition of the diverse communities within @cityofhamilton & the LGBTQ community. pic.twitter.com/UGGBms98UQ

Main Street West and Summers Lane will be home to the first set of rainbow crosswalks. Running in both directions, the crosswalks are located right across City Hall.
The second set of crosswalks will be located at Stirling Street and Forsyth Avenue. Located near McMaster University, this particular location was requested by Ward 1 Councillor Aidan Johnson.
The new crosswalks will send a message of diversity and inclusion across the city. Hamilton is home to many individuals in the LBGTQ+ community, as well as allies. Local businesses such as Cake & Loaf Bakery and Emerald Coffee Co. have proudly supported Hamilton’s LGBTQ+ community since day one.
As Hamiltonians, we know what it means to be proud of who we are. With the new crosswalks, there will be a clear message that no matter who you are or whom you love, you’ll always be welcome in Hamilton.
The cost of the crosswalks is estimated to be about $6,000 per location. For the message of hope and positivity it sends, it’s worth every penny.
