Hamilton’s mandatory mask bylaw, which requires non-medical face masks or coverings to be worn at all times in enclosed public spaces, has just been extended further into the common spaces at apartment and condo buildings.
On Monday, Hamilton’s board of health voted to include common spaces such as elevators, lobby areas, and laundry facilities in the city’s mandatory mask bylaw, which has been in place since July as a key health & safety measure amid the ongoing risks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

City council still has to ratify the decision later this week, and many condo residents have already been opting to wear their masks in elevators and similar common areas within their buildings.
Hamilton is also a little late to the party on this decision, following the lead of nearby municipalities and regions such as Burlington, Peel, and Toronto who have already added these common spaces to their mask mandate.
As of 9 am on September 21st, Hamilton public health has confirmed a total of 59 known active cases of COVID-19 locally, with the city’s overall total since the start of the pandemic sitting at 1,070 confirmed cases.
