Hamilton will install protective bollards at Ottawa and Cannon

The City of Hamilton is taking meaningful action in addressing the safety concerns at the lopsided intersection of Ottawa Street North and Cannon Street.

This particular intersection is a notorious one, with multiple instances of vehicles hopping the curb and colliding with storefronts, causing significant damages.

In fact, it’s happened twice in the past four months alone, with both Cannon Coffee Co. and Poke Co. – at the southeast and northwest corners of the intersection, respectively – facing damages to their facades after vehicles struck them.

The continued safety risks to storefronts, pedestrians, and drivers have prompted a community outcry that’s louder than ever; and thankfully, infrastructure changes are finally coming to the troubled intersection.

According to a social media post by Ward 3 councillor Nrinder Nann, actions to address the safety issues include enhanced markings for the Cannon bike lanes and replacement of all pavement markings within the intersection; implementing no-right-turn-on-red restrictions on the Ottawa St side; adding temporary bump-outs; and design of signal operation changes.

Importantly, this also includes the installation of crash protection bollards on the northwest and southeast corners of the intersection which are set to be installed today – Tuesday, December 19th.
